Rogers' return to League complete
Monday January 15 2007
Ex-Wallaby signs for new League franchiseThe Gold Coast Titans confirmed on Monday that they have signed Mat Rogers and that he will begin training on Tuesday morning.
This means that Rogers will re-commence his Rugby League career a year earlier than anticipated.
Titans' Managing Director, Michael Searle, said that he was more than happy to give Rogers time and space to be with his family before they closed the deal.
"The most important people in this whole process have always been Mat and his young family and we certainly werent about to start hounding him for a decision on where he played next year when there were certainly much more important things for him to be thinking about."
"After a meeting today, I am delighted to announce that Mat Rogers will be playing for the Gold Coast Titans in 2007 and I am confident that as a club we will reap the rewards of having a refreshed and super enthusiastic Mat Rogers in our team," said Searle.
The Titans are a new side in the National Rugby League (NRL) and Rogers joins them as they begin preparations for their pre-season warm-up games.
Rogers is excited to be playing League again after having made the decision to revert to the code only months ago.
"Im just rapt to have everything sorted out and I'm very much looking forward to getting in and doing the hard yards with the boys... I just want to roll the sleeves up and make sure I am right up there in the mix when the first team is announced in a few weeks."
"To be back in Rugby League a year earlier than I expected is just huge and Im really excited with the team that Coach John Cartwright and Michael have put together."
John Cartwright believes the Titans are now "the envy of the Premiership" - having signed six internationals, including Rogers, before their first season has even begun. Mat is evidently a major coup for the coach.
"Mat brings a whole new dimension to the squad, hes an exciting game breaker who creates scoring opportunities and hes also a player who is more than capable of coming up with something brilliant from anywhere on the field which is a great asset to have during tight matches."
This brings a final close to the Rugby Union career of Mat Rogers, who returns to the code in which his father, Steve Rogers, was legendary.
