SA geared for Super onslaught

Franchises announce squads

The five South African franchises on Thursday declared themselves ready for another Super 14 campaign, a tournament no SA team has won since Transvaal (now the Lions) won the Super 10 in 1993.

And the mood, in this World Cup year, is decidedly positive - with the South Africans feeling that they can finally end the 13-year drought in Super rugby.

SA Rugby, the commercial arm of the South African Rugby Union (SARU), on Thursday confirmed the names of the players that will represent five local Super 14 squads for the 2007 season.

With the announcement of squads of depth, experience and talent, South African rugby fans won't be satisfied with anything less than a season noted for new silverware in the trophy cabinet.

As individual selections go the most worthy is the inclusion of former Springbok captain Bob Skinstad, who was confirmed in the Sharks Super 14 squad. Skinstad has not played serious rugby since 2003, but has come out of retirement in a bid to win a place in the Springbok's World Cup squad.

The 30-year-old No.8 has joined the Durban-based Sharks, but was left out of their last warm-up game on Wednesday because his conditioning was not yet up to standard, said coach Dick Muir.

The Super 14 starts next Friday, a few weeks earlier than usual because of the Rugby World Cup in France later in the season.

Andy Marinos, Manager of National Teams at SA Rugby, said more local players were able to gain valuable experience as a result of the expanded format introduced in 2006.

"We are looking forward to another challenging and competitive Vodacom Super 14 campaign. Our teams have prepared well for the tournament and with the World Cup in mind, you can bet the players will use the opportunity to impress the national selectors," said Marinos.

Peter Jooste, convenor of the national selectors, said he was very pleased with and extremely encouraged by the close co-operation between the Super 14 coaches and the National Teams Department.

"I am confident that our common approach will be of great benefit to everyone in this very important World Cup year," explained Jooste.

The Lions, formerly known as the Cats, will kick-off the South African participation in the competition when they host Australian visitors the Waratahs next Friday evening in Johannesburg. The match at Ellis Park starts at 19h10.

The Lions team has a new coach in Eugene Eloff who took over from Frans Ludeke.

The four remaining SA teams will contest two tough local derbies the following day, Saturday 3 February.

The Sharks welcome the Bulls in Durban, while the Cheetahs and Stormers will clash in the evening match in Bloemfontein.
