Preview - Scotland v Barbarians
Tuesday May 30 2006
Greenwood draws down the curtainScotland captain Jason White insists the exertions of the Guinness Premiership final triumph are behind him now as he focuses on the arrival of the Barbarians on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old flank was part of the Sale Sharks team which romped to a 45-20 win over Leicester Tigers at Twickenham on Saturday.
White played the full 80 minutes at the weekend, but maintains he is feeling no ill-effects and is raring to go against the Barbarians.
"Physically, I'm 100 percent fit - it's more the mental side of things I have had to worry about because it was a huge game.
"You spend so long concentrating on that task, you are drained by the time it is all over, but I've had a bit of time to relax and I'm ready to go again.
"The rest of the Sale guys are still in the pub. I had a few beers on Saturday night, but I knew I was going to have to keep my sensible hat on. It was a great night and a great day.
"But now I'm looking forward to the Barbarians game.
"The passion the guys in the Scotland squad have when it comes to playing for their country means you are not going to switch off or not be motivated to play.
"The game on Saturday was a massive match, but so is this one on Wednesday."
Scotland coach Frank Hadden has named a strong starting XV for the game ahead of the two-Test tour of South Africa next month.
And the Scots skipper insists every man in the team will be fighting for a place against the Springboks.
"We are not taking this lightly," he said. "We are all expecting the Baa-Baas to come up here and play a certain way, with one-handed off-loads and all that sort of stuff.
"They will try to deconstruct the game, but they will be competitive and serious about winning. If we give them an inch, they will take a mile.
"We will not fall into the trap of playing the way they want us to play - we'll be trying to stick to our game-plan."
Scotland boss Hadden will use the visit of the Barbarians as the start for his World Cup preparations.
"We regard this contest against the Barbarians very much as a Test match," said the coach.
"We're looking to develop some of our attacking repertoire, but, most of all, we are looking to put in a performance.
"This game is important both relative to the tour of South Africa and to next year's World Cup as we only have around a dozen games to prepare for the World Cup."
White will be joined in the back row by Kelly Brown, the 23-year-old Border Reivers player, who gets his chance at openside flanker ahead of Donnie Macfadyen of Glasgow Warriors, who is on the bench.
In the absence of Simon Taylor, who will be out of action for the next four months after knee surgery, Allister Hogg is selected at number eight.
Craig Smith of Edinburgh Gunners receives a rare start at prop, while Dan Parks gets the nod ahead of Gordon Ross at stand-off.
Meanwhile, former England and Lions centre Will Greenwood is expecting no favours from Scotland when he ends his playing career as Barbarians captain at Murrayfield.
The 55-times capped Harlequins centre, who was awarded an MBE for services to rugby following the World Cup win of 2003, announced his retirement from the game in March.
The 33-year-old recognises the task ahead for the invitational team, who lost to Scotland for the first time last year in Aberdeen.
"I've been through this already having played my last game for my club side, Harlequins," he said.
"But this is an extra opportunity to play for a team I've only played for once before and have a bit of fun with a few mates.
"At the same time, we understand the size of the task against Scotland.
"It is not all about beers and golf - we are focused on our task at Murrayfield.
"Scotland have been doing extremely well over the past 12 to 18 months under Frank Hadden.
"We applaud what they have achieved and are under no illusions over to the task ahead of us.
"But, at the same time, you put that shirt on along with your own club socks and try to express yourself.
"We may run out of steam but we'll have a go and see how we get on."
Greenwood insists it is a "great honour" to end his career with the Barbarians, but he is determined to go out on a high.
He added: "I've been to Murrayfield a couple of times and enjoyed some half-decent results. But it is always a tough game, whatever the scoreline.
"The Scots have a great pride in their national shirt and understand what they're representing.
"They are preparing for a very tough tour of South Africa and will want to get their patterns in place and some good rhythm and record a good win to go down there in great confidence.
"We are an obstacle in the way of that and we will try and do our best to disrupt that.
"I might need a lung replacement after about 45 minutes, but we'll see how we get on."
