Newbury boss is new Sevens coach

Ben Ryan replaces Mike Friday

England Sevens team will be coached by Newbury Director of Rugby Ben Ryan for the rest of the current IRB Sevens series.

The 35-year-old replaces Mike Friday, who has resigned to take up a business role in the City.

Ryan's role with the RFU starts on January 1, 2007, and will be as a part-time consultant for the remaining six tournaments in the series.

However, in between, Ryan will continue to coach Newbury Blues in National League One, and also his role with England Counties.

"I can't wait for this opportunity and it's a great challenge," said Ryan to the BBC.

"Although the role is a big challenge, my goal is to put England Sevens at the top of the tree in the global game and hopefully secure England's first IRB Sevens series win."
