South Africa revises Sevens squad
Friday December 15 2006
Super 14 players ruled outPaul Treu, the Springboks Sevens coach, has invited 22 players to a training camp in Durban from January 9-16, 2007. He will now be without five players who have Super 14 contracts.
Out go Stefan Basson (Blue Bulls), Philip Burger (Cheetahs), Jonathan Mokuena (Lions), Kabamba Floors (Cheetahs) and Tobela Mdaka (Lions).
Treu said: "The unavailability of experienced players like Stefan Basson, Philip Burger, Jonathan Mokuena (captain), Kabamba Floors and Tobela Mdaka will leave the team vulnerable for the next two tournaments, but I am hopeful that the newcomers will use the opportunity to establish themselves."
The next two tournaments are in Wellington, New Zealand, on February 2-3 and San Diego, California, on February 10-11.
He does get a Springbok into the side - Gcobani Bobo who is no longer wanted in Super 14.
Treu says: "Bobo should add an exciting element of surprise and experience to the squad and I am looking forward to working with him.
"The big challenge for us will be our ability to stay competitive despite the big loss of experience. Wellington and San Diego are potentially the toughest two tournaments in the series and will be a severe test of our character for us.
"It is still early days, but consistency will be the key to staying in the hunt with the front-runners. Our main aim would be to maintain the level of competitiveness and intensity we have shown in Dubai and George."
