New Zealand Sevens trial squad namedNew Zealand Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens Sunday named a group of 26 players to trial for the national team at a four-day trial camp in Palmerston North, starting on Monday 22 January.
The trials are to select the team to represent New Zealand at the next two rounds of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens series in Wellington (NZ, February 2 and 3) and San Diego (USA, February 10 and 11).
Tietjens named his trial squad after the completion of the 2007 Pub Charity Rugby Sevens in Queenstown at the weekend.
A total of four players from Auckland, winners of the tournament in Queenstown, were included in the trial squad.
Tietjens said he was impressed with the quality of play on the final day of the national tournament.
"You expect the intensity to pick up on day two and that is exactly what we saw today. Conditions were not always easy, but the players that I have picked to trial were impressive," Tietjens said.
"The camp offers these players one last chance to prove that they deserve to be considered for national selection," he added.
The 2007 New Zealand contracted squad of 17 will be named at the conclusion of the camp.
